Local NewsMayfair Mall Peeping Tom Appears in Court 2/16/07By TMJ4 Staff
WAUWATOSA - A Milwaukee man appeared in court Friday after trying to take pictures of a woman who was using the bathroom at Mayfair Mall. Wauwatosa police say it happened Thursday, Feb. 15, near the food court at Mayfair.
Edward Allen Alexander, 34, was charged with three counts, including disorderly conduct. Bail was set at $2,000 and he could face up to four years in prison. He pleaded not guilty. Police say they found pictures of ten other women on Alexander's cell phone. But police are unsure of who those women are. Alexander has been ordered to stay away from Mayfair Mall, an his most recent, intended victim. He has been busted for this type of crime before. The criminal complaint says he asked officers for help, because jail hasn’t "helped him." TODAY'S TMJ4 talked with the victim, Tara Cole. "I was enraged, embarrassed, and ashamed, that I can go into a women's bathroom in a public place like a mall in the middle of the afternoon and here's some pervert in the stall next to me," she told TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Heather Shannon. Cole said she was using the bathroom near the food court when she saw the man's head peek out from under the stall partition. Moments later, he tried to use a cell phone camera to take her photo. Cole's picture was never found on the cell phone, but pictures of several other women were. She confronted the man and he claimed he accidentally went into the wrong bathroom. Cole's husband physically restrained the suspect until security arrived. Mayfair Mall staff said security guards aren't allowed in the bathrooms, so it is impossible to prevent something like this from happening. They said security was on the scene within a minute. "The fact that we can get there really quickly and take control of the situation, that's really our biggest focus at this point," Mayfair general manager Stephen Smith said. Cole said she will never go back to Mayfair, and is very nervous to use a public bathroom again. A lieutenant with the Butler Police Department confirmed that the man had been arrested for a similar incident at a restroom in the Butler Inn in February of 2005. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that he has also been arrested in Wauwatosa and Menomonee Falls for similar incidents. Cole would like to see harsher charges against Alexander. But Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm said Alexander could only be charged with three misdemeanors because Cole's picture was not found on the phone. If Cole's picture had been taken, Alexander could have faced felony charges. "It's classified as a misdemeanor but it exposes him to the equivalent of felony and jail time," Chisholm said. Alexander's record means he could face years, instead of months, in prison for this charge. Chisholm does admit that Wisconsin law needs to be updated to keep up with changing technology. "I believe personally that the time is going to come that we are going to have to re-vamp Wisconsin statutes as they relate to some of the technology changes," Chisholm said. That means suspects could face even harsher charges in the future. |
