Deputy Sheriff is a Walking Miracle

By Shelley Walcott

FRANKLIN - His speech was halting, his gait a little slow. Still, Tim Johnson is a walking miracle. In an exclusive interview at his home, the Milwaukee County sheriff's deputy told TODAY'S TMJ4's Shelley Walcott that he feels lucky to be alive.

Johnson was nearly killed on Jan. 12. He was clearing an accident on I-94 near Miller Park when a car hit him, throwing him 35 feet in the air. He landed head first in a concrete barrier. Johnson spent weeks in a coma, and doctors told his family he might not make it. But one day, he opened his eyes and he's been on a steady path to recovery ever since.

The deputy said he has no memory of the accident. And he harbors no resentment toward the driver who hit him. He said now that he's been given a second chance at life, he wants to tell people about Wisconsin 's Move Over Law. The law requires drivers to move over one lane when they see an emergency vehicle. If they can't move over, they must, at the very least, slow down.

Johnson and his family were honored at the Milwaukee Sheriff's Department for their work in promoting "Move Over." The family was the driving force behind a series of bumper stickers and billboards reminding people about the law.

As for the rest of his life, Johnson said he would like to return to work, as soon as his doctors give him the green light. For now, he's just enjoying his family and a second chance at life.
