Avery's Attorneys Fight Back 3/17/06

By Jenn Rourke

MANITOWOC - From the jail suit he has to wear to comments made by the prosecutor to the media, Steven Avery's attorneys are calling for changes. Avery walked into a court hearing today wearing that jail suit, and blew a kiss to his fiancee. His lawyer doesn't like the black and white stripes, saying it makes him look too guilty. "We can dress him up in something that makes him look like he jumped off a Monopoly game board," said Avery's attorney, Dean Strang. "He's a get out of jail free card come to life. But he's innocent as he sits here today." Despite arguments from Avery's lawyer, the judge decided to raise Avery's bail from $500,000 up to $750,000. Strang also protested comments made to the media by the special prosecutor in the case. He initially asked the judge to put a stop to them. But in the end, both sides agreed to work with each other to cut down on the amount of information they give to the press. Teresa Halbach's family had little sympathy for Avery's arguments. "Attorney Stang mentioned that (Avery) spent Thanksgiving in jail, he spent Christmas in jail - he's going to spend Easter in jail," said Halbach's brother. "Well, I spent my Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter without my sister." Avery's alleged accomplice, his 16-year-old nephew, Brendan Dassey, was also in court. Dassey confessed he knew what happened the night of Halbach's murder. His attorney said he'll fight to keep that confession from being used in the trial.
