RIVER HILLS - There's really no way to sugar coat this story. Life is a struggle for retired news anchor Melodie Wilson. But with the help of her husband and son, she wanted to deliver an important message: "Never give up this fight against breast cancer," she said.
The retired WTMJ and WITI news anchor is waging a valiant battle against an incurable form of breast cancer.
Surrounded by colleagues Thursday night, Melodie was presented with a special Emmy award. And more. ".. And we're here to give you a hug, former WITI news director Jill Geisler said. "Hugs are appreciated. Believe me," Melodie replied. "Thank you."
The Silver Circle Award is essentially a lifetime achievement award, and Mel has achieved a lot.
"This award means a great deal to me. It does mean a lot," she said.
Melodie has fought a very public battle against breast cancer over the years.
She founded ABCD, an organization to help other women cope. Touching as many lives in person as she did on TV.
Although her condition makes us sad, you'll be happy to know Mel is surrounded by a loving family determined to fill her final days with laughter and joy.
"I have never heard her complain," Melodie's husband Wayne Oldenburg said. "I have never heard her get angry. And I've never seen her break down or be sad about herself."
And through it all, Melodie is determined to present one last news item.. a plea, really: "Please find your own way to help fight to eliminate breast cancer," she said.
