Communities Say No To Paid Sick Leave

By Lauren Leamanczyk

Germantown--The Villages of Germantown, Menomonee Falls, and Kewaskum all passed ordinances Monday night prohibiting the communities from forcing businesses to provide certain benefits to workers. The moves came in response to the City of Milwaukee's new law which requires employers to provide paid sick time to full and part time employees. The ordinance is now facing legal challenges. Several Milwaukee County communities have already passed ordinances to prevent a similar law from being enacted in their areas. Monday night, that concern spread to Waukesha and Washington Counties. Germantown Village Trustee Dean Wolter said he wants businesses fed up with Milwaukee's law to re-locate to his community. “I would think some businesses would consider leaving just because of the burden that it would put on them. I would like them to consider Germantown as a safe haven," he said. Small business owners said they were relieved that communities were taking action before there are organized efforts to require paid sick leave. “That’s very encouraging to see them realizing the impact that it really would have on small business owners," said Carol Mastronardo. She and her husband own a travel agency and a restaurant. Germantown passed their ordinance unanimously. No one spoke against it.
