Dodge Co. Parents Unhappy with Icy Roads

By Heather Shannon

DODGE COUNTY - Icy roads caused several school districts throughout Dodge County to delay school for two hours. Now some parents are blaming the highway commission.

Glare ice is making driving dangerous on many Dodge County roads. So dangerous, that districts like Horicon delayed the start of school by two hours, so buses wouldn't have to drive on the icy roads in the dark.

"It's unacceptable because we pay taxes and we need our roads cleared," said Jeff Polzin.

Polzin is outraged Horicon High School was delayed because of icy roads. He blames the county's new salting approach.

"We can't get our kids to school on time because Dodge County Public Works didn't do their job correctly?" Polzin said.

The Dodge County Highway Commission admits roads are icier and slipperier this winter. Instead of straight salt, they're using a combination of 33 percent salt and 66 percent sand.

"It's more like I said a problem with the availability of salt and the need to conserve what we have and make it through the entire winter with limited supplies" said Dodge County Highway Commissioner Brian Field.

In addition to limited supplies, the county is also paying four times more for salt this year. So they're trying to stretch what they have.

"They're a little slipperier initially," Field said. "It takes a little longer to get the ice to melt off the pavement than we're used to, but it does clear up."

Not quickly enough for Polzin.

"It's totally unacceptable," Polzin said.

The highway commission says because salt is in such demand, roads may be icier and slipperier for a lot of winter so they're asking people here in Dodge County to simply slow down.
