Parents Get Details On UW Band Suspension

Associated Press

MILWAUKEE - A letter sent to parents of some 300 students in the University of Wisconsin marching band gives more details about hazing accusations that led to the band's suspension last Friday.

The letter from Dean of Students Lori Berquam told parents that "there's a concern that students may have been placed in unsafe situations or experienced humiliation in a hazing-like atmosphere."

Four specific accusations in the letter included: sexual fondling of students against their will; being forced or pressured to drink alcohol; being forced or pressured to have their hair cut in an unusual way; and being forced or pressured "to eat something disgusting."

The band did not play at last Saturday's home football game with Ohio State. UW officials expect to have an update on the band's status before this Saturday's game with undefeated Penn State.
