Businesses Cutting Jobs, Hiring Less

MILWAUKEE - More bad news about the economy: another area company is closing its doors…and that's just the beginning.

According to one report, more cuts are on the way, and more businesses will be hiring less.

In Milwaukee and across the country, some businesses are reporting they can't hire any more workers and that has people out of work worried.

"It’s really affecting me hard,” Bob Lennon said.

Lennon should know.

“I was just laid off recently. I work construction. The construction trade is slow, very, very slow right now,” Lennon said.

He's one of many who call themselves unemployed. In fact, Bemis Manufacturing just announced it's closing its Menomonee Falls plant sometime in the next two months. About 140 people could be out of work because of it.

"I hear people complain about it all the time,” Matt Ward said.

Ward just had his hours cut, and the complaints he hears are about the economy.

Manpower surveyed businesses in Milwaukee and nationwide who claim they will lay off more in the coming months and hire less. That means a lot of people are either losing their jobs or losing their hours.

"We're working 30-25 hours a week as opposed to last year when it was 40-45 hours because the economy is so bad,” Ward said.

“So many people are out of work right now looking for the same jobs I’m looking for,” Lannon said.

Although there may be positives in the economy, experts say it's bleak, and it's going to get worse before it gets better.

Bemis Manufacturing claims they will offer the people who lost their jobs in Menomonee Falls an opportunity to work at the plant in Sheboygan Falls. It's unclear how many will be able to take that offer.
