It’s amazing that all six people escaped the raging fire without injury. Now, charred remains is all that’s left of the house…that used to have so much meaning.
“We were so numb at the time, and I’m still very numb,” Julie Sorensen said.
Hot, fierce flames forced Sorensen and her family from their Muskego home.
“I told my twins to crawl. The house was just bathed in smoke. It was so thick and grey,” Sorensen said.
Sorensen’s entire family, including her 13-year-old twins and handicapped brother-in-law, made it out, just in time.
“It’s surreal. We’ve had so much happen in our life. It feels like one thing after another,” Sorensen said.
Firefighters put out the fire and left the scene. A few hours later, the house was raging once again.
“Obviously we overlooked something and it rekindled,” Muskego Fire Chief Andy Mack said.
Now, the house is a total loss, and Sorensen is devastated.
“This is the last thing left from my father-in-law,” Sorensen said.
Sorensen’s father-in-law, Les Sorensen, built the house. Les was murdered during a robbery in Milwaukee more than two years ago.
“It’s…it’s gone. It’s just stuff, but it was part of him,” Sorensen said.
Now, Sorensen and the rest of her family are staying at a hotel until they figure out what to do next.
The Sorensens have set up a benefit account at the Associated Bank in Muskego. To donate, just stop by the Muskego branch Monday through Friday from 9:00a .m. to 5:30 p.m., or Saturday from 9:00 a.m. till noon.
