GREENFIELD - A Milwaukee mother is accused of taking her children along on a robbery spree on her birthday.

Police say Angelia Kelly, 37, drove the getaway car. Her 17-year-old son, Elmer Taylor was caught on tape robbing the Speedway gas station at Loomis and Howard in Greenfield. Police think he also robbed a station at 9th and Lincoln in Milwaukee.

Three other children were in the back seat of getaway car.

In surveillance video from the Speedway, you can see a young man walk up to the counter on Tuesday evening. He points the gun at the clerk, and the clerk gives up cash.

When the suspect left, the clerk called 911 and Greenfield police went into action.

A police sergeant spotted the getaway car and pulled it over at 35th and Oklahoma. The 17-year-old fled from the car, but officers caught the armed suspect behind the near-by Zablocki Library.

“It’s a very intense situation. I mean, you have officers with their guns out and they’re concerned, with a gun battle out in the street,” Greenfield Police Deputy Inspector Bradley Wentlandt said.

Police arrested Elmer Taylor and his mom, Angelia Kelly.

“We’re assuming that he was here for mom’s birthday and they decided to do some robberies on mom’s birthday,” Wentlandt said.

Police couldn’t believe who else was along for the ride. Three young children were in the car as well. Kelly’s other kids: a 13-month-old girl and two boys, 10 and 14 years old.

“The young boys are obviously traumatized. The 10-year-old was crying, very upset. All he really wanted was his Batman comic books, but really both of the boys knew exactly what was going on,” Wentlandt said.

Kelly and her son were being held at the Milwaukee County Jail. The district attorney has not yet filed charges.
