Neighbors Speak Out After Rash Of Violence

MILWAUKEE – Nervous neighbors are speaking out after a rash of violence in one Milwaukee neighborhood.
Many are saying the community must come together before things will get better.
Tempers ran high among some homeowners on Milwaukee’s northwest side Thursday about recent violence in their community.
“Get it done sooner. I am angry. You had young people playing by this house. They could have been shot. Let's do something about it sooner,” one neighbor said.
Folks in the neighborhood are concerned about a shooting last week outside a home where a Hmong family lives.
“There were bullets in the street. One went into one of their neighbor’s homes while he was watching TV,” Dawn Baker said.
Neighbors say it was the fourth shooting in the neighborhood in the last four years. No one was hurt, but Baker says it was scary because kids were playing outside at the time.
“I am tired of the gunshots. I am tired of the senseless shooting anywhere,” Baker said.
City leaders and police believe warring Asian gangs are behind the violence.
Alderman Joe Davis says it's time to sit down with Hmong leaders to tackle this problem.
“Because the Hmong community is so close- knit I don't want this to be a pie in the sky thing. I want to sit down and talk about their young people being recruited to gangs and really coming up with some comprehensive solutions,” Alderman Davis said.
In the meantime, Baker hopes community leaders do something so she can have peace in her neighborhood again.
“I don't know if they are a gang. I couldn't tell you and I don’t really care if they are a gang. We don't want any shooting. No one wants any shooting in anybody's neighborhood,” Baker said.
Alderman Davis says Thursday's rally is a first of many steps he will personally take to get try to get a handle on gang violence in the neighborhood.
Some residents are also calling for more police presence to help stop crime.
