MARINETTE COUNTY - The Michigan man charged with killing three teenagers appeared in court Thursday.

Because the judge is worried Scott Johnson might try to flee if he gets out, his bail is set very high at $3 million.

That number is actually smaller than the $5 million the district attorney wanted.

“It seems like this is a fair compromise between what the state and the defense asked for,” Marinette County DA Brent DeBord said.

Those big numbers show what a big deal this case is in Marinette County.

Thursday was the first time we saw Johnson in court. He faces three murder charges for allegedly killing three teenagers at random while they were swimming in the Menominee River.

The DA said Johnson could face an attempted murder charge for a forth victim who survived and a sexual assault charge for a separate incident the day before.

While Johnson was in court, family members were saying goodbye to Bryan Mort at a visitation and funeral in Iron Mountain, Mich.

People all over northeast Wisconsin and the UP are stunned by the crime. The aunt of one victim talked about the loss.

“He was at his graduation party, and I said to him ‘Tony, you look like you're having so much fun,’ and he said ‘I am, Auntie Cathy’ and he gave me a big hug, and he said ‘I love you,’ and that was the last thing I heard him say,” Cathy Spigarelli said.

It's still going to be a while before the case goes on trial, but already, people are talking about courtroom security. This case is such a big deal that they're going to bring in extra deputies to make sure everything stays under control.
