Teen Murders Jolt Wisconsin, Michigan Communities

IRON MOUNTAIN, MICHIGAN - Family members talk about the big plans three teenagers had for the future. Now, those relatives are planning funerals.
Nineteen-year-old Bryan Mort, 18-year-old Anthony Spigarelli and 17-year-old Tiffany Pohlson were killed at a popular swimming spot along the river that divides Wisconsin from Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
"He would give the clothes off his body just to help somebody out," said David Mort about his older brother Bryan. "He was just trying to enjoy the last couple weeks until he had to go to college."
Near the secluded, usually peaceful stretch of the Menominee River under a railroad bridge, authorities say 38-year-old Scott Johnson jumped from bushes and fired several shots from a high-powered rifle.
Johnson graduated high school in this area. He enlisted in the Army where he served for almost a decade. More recently, Johnson had been living with his mother Judy in nearby Kingsford, Michigan.
"I don't know the why of anything," said Judy Johnson after her son's arrest. "I don't know anything. My heart goes out. I don't know why this happened."
There's a bizarre connection to the murder scene. A 24-year-old woman told authorities Johnson sexually assaulted her in the same woods days before the shooting. She was not there when the three young adults were killed. Authorities said it wasn't clear whether the assault on Wednesday was related to the shooting, and Johnson has not been charged with sexual assault.
"Bryan was only 19," said Donald Beery, Bryan Mort's brother-in-law. "He was supposed to have his whole life in front of him."
Teenagers who frequent the swimming spot where this happened say they have seen Scott Johnson hanging around the area before, although he never said much.
Johnson disappeared for nearly 16 hours after the shooting before emerging from a wooded area, throwing down his rifle and surrendering to police. The 38-year-old is expected to appear in court Monday or Tuesday, said Jerry Sauve, Marinette County chief sheriff's deputy.
Bryan Mort spent a lot of time at his United Methodist church in Iron Mountain. He planned to start college at the University of Northwestern Ohio later this month. Friends contributed to a memorial on the front steps of the Mort family home.
Tiffany Pohlson was to start her senior year at Kingsford High School this fall.
Family members say Anthony Spigarelli was a talented snow boarder. He just graduated from Kingsford High School and had talked about becoming an engineer.
Visitation for Spigarelli will be Tuesday, August 5, 2008 3:00-6:30 p.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. The funeral service will be, Tuesday 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Autopsies were done Saturday in Green Bay on the bodies of Spigarelli and Pohlson. They died almost instantly, according to a authorities.
Mort survived long enough to undergo emergency medical treatment at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain. He died hours after the shooting
A fourth victim, 20-year-old Daniel Louis Gordon, was wounded. All were from Michigan.
