MILWAUKEE - As Midwest Airlines is scaling back flights in Milwaukee, AirTran is moving in. The Florida-based company is adding new flights from Mitchell Airport. Some of them the very same routes Midwest announced it’s cutting just three days ago.
Audrie Berman and her family were flying AirTran Wednesday instead of Midwest.
"I would prefer that Midwest was in better shape and did not have to give up those routes,” Berman said.
AirTran is going after markets that Midwest is abandoning. AirTran will open a new route to Fort Lauderdale. They're also adding more flights to cities like Fort Myers, Tampa, Orlando, and Baltimore.
Northwest announced a new flight to LA this week.
Some passengers say it’s easier to fly AirTran.
"Definitely price comes first. There wasn't a lot of stops on this flight in particular, so that was another plus,” Lakenya Farmer said.
Many passengers choose Midwest for the service. Some said they'd go out of their way to fly Midwest.
"Midwest happens to be one of my favorites, so I’d probably stick with Midwest out of La Guardia,” Bob Malarkey said.
“My experience has led me to believe I would go Midwest even if there's a stop. Even if it's more money,” Maie Harris said.
A Midwest spokesman questioned how long AirTran can keep these new flights going. He says Midwest couldn't make those Florida routes profitable, so he expects AirTran to face the same problems.
AirTran may also be some cutting flights while they are adding others. An AirTran employee told one of our reporters that flights to Washington D.C. are now being re-routed to Baltimore.
Air Tran's Web site shows no remaining non-stops from Milwaukee to D.C.
We tried to contact AirTran, but our calls were not returned.
