Exclusive: Puppy Mill Owner Runs Daycares
Lauren Leamanczyk
MADISON - The owner of a Markesan area puppy mill recently acquired by the Wisconsin Humane Society also ran four daycares in the Madison area. Wallace Havens' children now operate the daycares.
The child care centers are called Play Haven and they've drawn the attention of state inspectors and a local child care watchdog group.
At the East Towne location, Play Haven has been fined three times in the last couple years for various problems. They've been cited for violations on more than 30 occasions during the same time period.
Those violations included not changing diapers quickly enough, not allowing infants and toddlers enough outdoor playtime and not having enough staff to supervise.
Wallace Havens chose not to comment for this story.
Parents at the daycare were stunned both by the violations and the link to a puppy mill.
Vanessa Fulford says she's had concerns before about her daughter's childcare.
"I've been noticing the cleanliness of the place has not been so good and a lot of kids have been getting ear infections and stuff," she said.
Still, Fulford had no idea the daycare had received so many citations.
Other parents praised Play Haven. Eugene Cisler says they've taught his children sign language and have always been responsible.
"Maybe they need to do something about the puppy mills, but the daycare is doing a good job," Cisler said.
Rob Friemoth agreed, though after seeing the stack of complaints, he admitted he may seek a new child care service.
The state says it's undeniable that Play Haven centers have had several problems over the years, but a spokesperson from the Department of Children and Families added, they haven't had any problems in several months, a sign that conditions are improving.
