FEMA Tours Jefferson County Friday

JEFFERSON - FEMA finally got to Jefferson County Friday.
It’s one of the hardest hit parts of our state and it has still not been declared a disaster area.
FEMA is sending the disaster information in now. Residents are hoping the White House will find that the flooding warrants giving the victims money to get back on their feet.
It’s the door-to-door tour the area’s been waiting for. Jefferson County officials showed FEMA inspectors widespread flood damage to prove water logged residents like Deborah Stults deserve federal relief.
“The furnace I haven’t tried. It was in water about 10 inches. It’s a brand new furnace, so I guess we’ll just to see when this all clears,” Stults said.
Even though Jefferson County suffered some of the worst flooding, it’s one of the last to get federal attention and FEMA claims that’s the governor’s call.
“He makes up that list and we go wherever he tells us to go,” FEMA spokesperson Hannah Vick said.
Governor Jim Doyle toured Jefferson, Fort Atkinson and surrounding towns from the air Friday. He believes the short delay will not make a difference.
“In the old days, you used to be talking about weeks or months. Now, people are saying, 'How come they weren’t here yesterday?' But people are here today. FEMA has acted incredibly promptly,” Governor Doyle said.
FEMA had a good look Friday. Now, we just wait to see if Jefferson will be added to the list of Wisconsin counties declared federal disaster areas.
