SUSSEX - The family of a woman killed when a car struck her on a freeway has set up a fund to pay for her funeral.
Denise Merkel, 54, died after stepping out of a disabled vehicle in Waukesha County Saturday morning.
It happened at about 5:30 a.m. Saturday on I-43 southbound in New Berlin near Racine Avenue.
The car was parked on the outside shoulder, but Merkel was hit when she walked across the traffic lane.
The family has established the memorial fund at North Shore Bank in Wauwatosa.
