Women celebrate heart disease awareness

MILWAUKEE - February is Heart Health Month, and all this month, the American Heart Association has helped get the word out that woman are as vulnerable as men when it comes to heart disease.
"I'm a very active individual, I was leaving an exercise class when I started to sweat profusely,”said 50-year-old Kimberly Montgomery. “I thought I was having a hot flash."
But it was not a hot flash, Montgomery was having a heart attack. Her story is featured prominently on the website for the American Heart Association for the month of February.
A recent fashion show at the Wesley Park/VMP Manor Park in West Allis was part of a national campaign by the American Heart Association to stress the importance of heart health. More women die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined.
"We're celebrating the fact that the awareness is out there, we need women to be aware as well as the men who love them,” said organizer Jan Schneider.
Models of several generations wore red outfits from Kohl's Department Store.
"It's driving the point and bringing them home that you really can’t be too careful with your heart," said Schneider.
"Since 1984 more women than men die from heart disease,” said Dr. Joshua Liberman, Chairman of Cardiology at Columbia St. Mary's. “I think it’s important for women to understand this is the number one health risk that they face. It's important they try to learn about it."
But with recent awareness campaign, more women have a better chance to prevent and combat heart disease.
