VERNON - .It took more than 50 firefighters to get it under control. The old farm house in the Town of Vernon looks like a total loss.
The elderly owner is safe and now residents are ready to rally around the man they know as Farmer Wayne.
"I was like 'Oh my gosh, Wayne’s house burned down,'" said 12-year-old Sara Green.
She heard the news as she arrived home from school. Pictures from the outside of the house show the devastation. But for someone who has been inside Farmer Wayne's nearly century old house, it's heart breaking.
"It was such a nice house," said Green. "Just so cozy and warm. It’s just sad because that house has always been there."
Sara helped to safely remove the three horses from a barn near the fire. More than a dozen fire departments battled the fire for hours. We’re told a neighbor first noticed the fire and tried to help. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
But neighbors have now joined the cause to help the friendly farmer in any way they can. Yes, he survived the fire but they know he has lost a lot.
"He has so much love for everyone else that you want to help him because you love him too," said Green.
The homeowner had minor injuries. His pet dog did not survive.
