Guide dies when snowmobile falls in Lake Superior
DULUTH, Minn. - A fishing guide has died after his snowmobile went through the ice on Lake Superior off Bayfield, Wisconsin.
The Ashland County Sheriff's Office says 34-year-old James Hudson, of Bayfield, broke through in the channel between Long Island and the mainland. Authorities received the call shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday.
The U.S. Coast Guard says a bystander may have tried to pull Hudson from the water, but kept falling through the ice. Rescue crews pulled Hudson from the lake about a half-hour later.
He was pronounced dead at a Duluth hospital.
Hudson guided anglers year-round on Lake Superior.
His wife garnered worldwide attention last summer for a picture she took of a man and his elderly dog resting in Lake Superior on a summer day.
