Stamp Out Hunger: Letter Carriers Collect Food
Charles Benson
MILWAUKEE - Stamping out hunger one mail delivery at a time. Saturday, letter carriers picked up your food in hopes of keeping area people fed.
It's an amazing effort: 700 volunteers like Brenda Peterson, 1,200 Milwaukee letter carriers like Scott Lang and 630,000 pounds of food collected, all to help stamp out hunger.
"It's a way to help needy families," Peterson said.
"Very good, lots of food out there!" Lang said.
"There's not a goal or target," said Rick Lewadowski with the Hunger Task Force. "We are just trying to get as mush as possible with food being down this year. This is our most important drive of the year and biggest drive of the year."
Letter carrier Chris Haase picked up all kinds of donations.
"A lot of cereal," said Hasse. "A lot of baby food. As for an unusual item, I saw jar of jalapeno slices."
"My folks out in Fox Point, River Hills and Bayside are extremely generous people," Hasse said.
In fact, based on the boxes of donated food there were generous people everywhere and lots of volunteers like Peterson to help sort through it all.
"There's a lot of food coming in and it's something easy I can do," Peterson said.
The Hunger Task Force says the food will be needed this summer to help feed students who will no longer be able to take advantage of the free breakfast and lunch school programs.
