MILWAUKEE - Murder charges have been filed in the death of a man who disappeared earlier this month.
Five people are charged in the death of 22-year-old Evon Young. TODAY’s TMJ4’s Cody Holyoke spoke with Young's mother, who helped lead police to the suspects.
Evon young lived with a roommate in a northwest Milwaukee home. Police now say that roommate, and four other men, had a hand in killing Young on New Year's Day. Young's mother is beside herself with grief, and she wants justice.
“You're not supposed to bury your kids,” said Annette Perry, Young’s mom. “They're supposed to continue your legacy."
For the last 21 days, Perry worked tirelessly to find her child. Evon Young, a transgendered man, disappeared New Year's Day. His roommate told police young took off and never returned.
"He never told me a lot of things, because he didn't want me to worry,” said Perry. “He wanted to be independent. He wanted to make his own way."
Authorities maintain the roommate’s story was a lie. They believe Billy Griffin, Ashanti Mcalister, Victor Stewart, Devin Seaberry and Ron Allen beat, strangled, and shot Young, after an argument over a robbery.
“I just didn't want him to suffer,” said Perry. “I didn't want him to have no pain."
Annette Perry doesn't want to know the details, but she did help crack the case, spotting a cell phone in front of Young's house.
“We didn't even realize it was possibly something to do with it, but it was,” said Perry.
Police tracked the cell phone to the suspects, who confessed to dumping young's body in a dumpster and setting it on fire. Police also found a chain, believed to have strangled Young.
But there are no signs of Young. Authorities are searching landfills, while Young's mom works to keep her composure.
"My son was a good person, and there's nothing that anyone can tell me that justifies what they did to him,” said Perry.
Even though Young is a transgendered man, police believe there's nothing in this case that points to his death being the result of a hate crime.
Authorities continue their search for young's remains. All five of the men said to be involved are behind bars.
