Family Of Shooting Victim Speaks Out

George Mallet

SLINGER - The family of Nicole Sell faced reporters Thursday night, gathering in Fireman’s Park. Nicole’s aunt, Kim Schlise, spoke for the family and fielded all of the questions posed by reporters.

“Its been tough on all of us,” Schlise said as she nervously clutched a tiny snapshot of her lovely niece. “My sister, Chris, has been at the hospital since this happened, by Nicole’s side.”

Schlise offered an update on her niece’s condition, saying the teen is now in a medically induced coma at Children’s Hospital. She is listed in critical but stable condition.

Nicole and her friends, Justin Towne and Scott Cecil, were driving home from their jobs at Casa Rebecca Saturday night. Towne and Cecil told authorities an SUV started tailgating them, then pulled in front of them and somebody inside started firing shots. Nicole sustained a gunshot would to the head.

Shortly after the shooting, Washington County Sheriff Dale Schmidt said the crime was not a random act. But since that time he has steadfastly refused to explain his conclusion. Still, that hasn’t troubled Nicole’s family, merely confused them.

“How do you define random?” Schlise asked aloud. “Maybe they didn’t know Nicole was in the back seat. That would be random.”

There are no suspects in the crime. The sheriff’s department has only a vague description of the shooter’s vehicle.
