Six Arrested In Racine Drug Bust

RACINE - SWAT team officers found more than half-a-dozen kids living in a home with no electricity and no heat Thursday morning. They made the discovery during a drug bust.
Police spent weeks planning the drug raid on six homes on one street.
Turns out, they didn't find much in the way of drugs, but they say the conditions they found eight children living in were deplorable.
Seventy-five law enforcement officers including the FBI busted six suspected drug houses on Owens Street in Racine Thursday morning. Police say they were looking for drugs and drug dealers.
“From an officer's safety standpoint, we are better going in with too many officers than not enough,” Racine Police Sergeant Bernie Kupper said.
They didn't find many drugs, but they did find 19 people living in a single family house. Perhaps even more disturbing, they found eight children living in a duplex without heat or electricity.
The children range in age from 10 months to 13 years old. Police arrested the mothers of the children for various charges. The children's aunt says she'll care for them until their mothers get out of jail.
“It turns out there was running water in parts of the house, but there was no electrical or heat,” Sgt. Kupper said.
TODAY’S TMJ4’s Ty Milburn asked, “And the conditions weren't good as you describe them?”
“No they weren't good,” Sgt. Kupper said.
In all, police arrested six people, most on old warrants.
Ty Milburn: “Some in the neighborhood are asking was the big drug bust a bust because police didn't get the big prizes they were looking for.”
“It's still worth it because we never know until we go in the door what we are going to find,” Sgt. Kupper said.
