Aldermen: Turn Music Down Or Off

MILWAUKEE - Turn the music down or pay up. That's the message the city wants to send to motorists who crank their car stereos.

The plan is unique because it involves the citizens. The city is asking us to watch for drivers blaring their music and turn them in to police.

The summer season means the start of sounding stereos.

“It's been a problem throughout the city for years, really. There is nothing in my mind more obnoxious,” Alderman Bob Donovan said.

That's why Alderman Donovan proposed a plan that allows the community to act as watchdogs...in order to get drivers to tone it down.

The safety committee passed the plan Thursday morning.

“This is empowering the citizens to take action and help the police by calling in, reporting things,” Alderman Donovan said.

That means anyone who witnesses a vehicle with an extremely loud stereo can report that vehicle’s license plate number to police. Officers will investigate the complaint and send a warning letter to the registered owner. Any offense after that could result in a $100 fine.

The Milwaukee Police Department is in favor of it.

“I know the chief is supportive of this program. I think it's going to help a great deal,” Alderman Donovan said. “The message we want to send is loud and clear: turn it down or turn it off.”

This is just a pilot program. If it passes it will kick off June 16th.
