MILWAUKEE -  A man from Milwaukee will spend five years behind bars for a deadly hit-and-run crash.

Luis Perez pleaded guilty to striking Gilbert Vazquez at 16th St. and Lincoln Ave. in May and then taking off.  He did not have a valid driver's license or auto insurance.  Before his sentence was handed down, Perez addressed the court.

"To the victim's family I want to say that I'm sorry," he said.  "I wish i can bring him back."

"Gilbert was prepared to be a productive working citizen in our community," his mother Laura Manriquez said.  "All Gilbert's dreams - and the dreams of our closely knit family were shattered the day he was hit by a person."

Even though she did not believe Perez's apology to be sincere, she hopes that her family can learn and heal from this tragedy.

"There's always hope and we have to keep hope alive," she said.
