MILWAUKEE - Two suspects picked the wrong place to rob.

An off-duty Milwaukee police sergeant caught them in the act at a gas station at 92nd & Burleigh.

That sergeant spoke with TODAY’S TMJ4’s Melanie Stout.

Sgt. James MacGillis was visiting a relative when he stopped at the Speedway. He looked through the window and saw a robbery in progress.

Sgt. MacGillis is a regular at the Speedway, but he never saw armed men robbing the place until Sunday night.

“I could see one of the gas station attendants with her hands in the air and a suspect wearing a ski mask armed with a weapon,” Sgt. MacGillis said.

MacGillis was off-duty and in plain clothes still in went into action. He parked his car near a pump, stopped customers from going in, called for backup and waited for the robbers to come out.

“I drew my gun. I had my badge on,” MacGillis said.

He saw the guys come in his direction.

“I identified myself as a Milwaukee police officer, but its always a concern in plain clothes and a small badge on, but I was yelling it so loud multiple times, giving strong verbal commands,” MacGillis said.

One suspect tried to run, but MacGillis lead uniformed officers to them. One suspect was tackled and arrested. The other got away. In the end, no shots were fired and no one was hurt.

“My first priority was to make sure I was safe, the people inside were safe and call for backup,” MacGillis said.

Milwaukee police are still looking for that second suspect and ask anyone with information on the case to give them a call.
