Marquette to present Tolkien illustrations
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Most people know J.R.R. Tolkien's writing in the "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings."
But he was also an artist and illustrated the original editions of both stories.
Two Tolkien scholars are holding a free event on Thursday afternoon at Marquette University to show his work.
Wayne Hammond and Christina Scull, authors of "J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator and The Art of the Hobbit" will present a slideshow on how Tolkien envisioned Middle-Earth.
Marquette has an extensive Tolkien collection, including an original watercolor rendering by Tolkien of the dust cover for "The Hobbit" and Thror's map.
Obtained directly from the author in the late 1950s, Marquette's collection includes multiple working drafts for "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings."
