Paul Ryan's mom thrilled about her son's VP chances
WHITEFISH BAY- Paul Ryan will be back home this weekend to take his kids trick-or-treating.
But for the first time the candidate's mom talked about her son being in the spotlight. Everyone knows her as Betty, or Paul's mom, but she is Betty Ryan Douglas and she's very proud of her son.
"It's thrilling but it's a little scary," said Douglas.
She remembers the night her son called to say he was going to be Mitt Romney's vice presidential running mate.
"He said he had been asked to serve and I said 'it's a call to duty.'"
The other life-changing moment for Paul was when his father died. Paul was only 16-years-old.
"He suddenly realized that he was the only one left at home so I am the man of the house."
Paul's mom calls herself the "mother of a passionate patriot" but she never expected him to be a politician.
"He never started out that way it was always behind the scenes, you'd never thought he would run for an office," said Douglas.
Now he's running for Joe Biden's job. She was at the VP debate with her son and had a brief conversation with the vice president after it was over.
He said: "'You have a really strong young man,'" and I said: "Thank you sir."
Paul's mom no longer lives in Wisconsin, so she's really happy she will be able to vote for her son this time around.
