Elderly shootout suspect accused of trying to kill a Waukesha police officer
WAUKESHA- An elderly man from Waukesha accused of firing at police officers during a standoff has been charged with a slew of felonies including attempted first-degree intentional homicide.
Waukesha County prosecutors say that 76-year-old Dick Petarius shot twice at officers at his ex-wife's condominium earlier this week. Officers fired back 26 times. Petarius' ex-wife has a broken arm, but no one was seriously hurt during the firefight.
Petarius was allegedly involved in a domestic violence dispute with his ex-wife, which promoted a 9-1-1 call Tuesday evening.
Upon officers' arrival, the Waukesha Patch reports that Petarius fired a 12-gauge shotgun at Police Officer Amanda Bauer. The shot missed Bauer by inches.
After a nearly one-hour long standoff, Petarius surrendered peacefully.
He has been charged with nine felonies and a misdemeanor for his alleged actions at the Wynwood Condos.
He is expected back in court next Thursday for a hearing, according to online court records.
Petarius had a history of community involvement. He served as the director of clowns for Tripoli Shriners.
