SHOREWOOD, Wis. - A second floor balcony was a life-line for a Shorewood resident Saturday whose home caught fire.

Flames and smoke trapped the resident in the 27-hundred block of East Jarvis around 2:30am, and firefighters got their ladder truck up just in time to make a dramatic rescue.

That person's now being treated at Columbia-St. Mary's Hospital with injuries due to smoke inhalation and burns, as well as heartache. A dog died in the fire.

Smoke detectors were operating and alerted the resident to the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
