Racine sailor dies in schooner race
GLOUCESTER, Virginia - A sailor from Racine lost his life in an annual race on the east coast this weekend.
Officials say 68 year old Paul Stephen Case was killed after a sail on his vessel knocked him overboard during the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race Friday night.
The accident happened off Windmill Point near Gloucester, Virginia.
The Virginian-Pilot reports (http://bit.ly/X6uFtc ) that Case was one of seven on the crew of a 43-foot schooner homeported in Pasadena, Maryland.
He was not wearing a life jacket.
Crew members were able to find him and perform CPR, but efforts to save his life were unsuccessful.
According to the race's website, more than 30 vessels participated in the race from Annapolis, Md., to north of Hampton Roads.
