Gov. Walker to attend farewell ceremony for troops headed to Afghanistan
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Governor Scott Walker plans to attend a farewell ceremony for a group of Wisconsin Army National Guard soldiers headed to Afghanistan.
Sixteen soldiers from the newly formed 104th Security Force Advise and Assist team are set to depart Monday for a one-year mission mentoring Afghan border police. The farewell ceremony is set for 8 a.m. Monday at the Wisconsin National Guard's Madison headquarters.
Following the ceremony the soldiers will head to Camp Shelby in Mississippi for several weeks of training. They'll then move to Fort Polk in Louisiana for mission-specific training. They're expected to leave for Afghanistan in early January.
