Delta, American Airlines Cancel Flights

MILWAUKEE - Big trouble at airports nationwide as Delta Airlines decides to cancel hundreds of flights for safety inspections.

It's having an impact on flights in Milwaukee as well.

Wednesday, American Airlines grounded hundreds of flights after the FAA started raising questions about safety. Thursday, Delta decided to do the same thing, leaving a lot of passengers wondering if their flights would make it.

Rexx Igunbor got some bad news Thursday. He's flying on Delta on a day when the airline delayed and canceled hundreds of flights for maintenance.

"Hoping to get there around 7 'o clock, and from there, do our connecting flight. So if they're not going to be on time, it's going to ruin our connecting flight,” Igunbor said.

Only one flight was canceled in Milwaukee Thursday, but by midday, many flights were delayed. We don't know whether the delays were caused by the maintenance or the weather.

Delta decided to have their planes checked out after American Airlines was advised by the FAA to check their MD-80s.

That has some people wondering whether the smaller carriers, like Midwest, will start grounding their planes as well.

A Midwest spokesperson says they re-checked their maintenance records and they claim they're up to date. Passengers we spoke with say they'd rather have delays than fly on a plane that could be dangerous.

"I wish it would have been done earlier, but at least they're getting to it,” Maria Hacker said.

Others say a busy travel season isn't the best time for a nationwide maintenance operation.

"I can't imagine why they would choose this time to do this,” Deborah Holbrook said.

A Delta spokesperson tells me they plan to have all their planes back in the sky by Friday morning.
