Car Crashes Into Building
George Mallet
STURTEVANT - For much of Wednesday afternoon there was a decidedly unusual sight along Durand Avenue here. A grey, four-door sedan could be seen peeking out the front of an apartment building surrounded by crumbled concrete, broken glass and displaced sheetrock.
A woman trying to move the car out of a nearby parking space had allowed the front wheels to hang over the pavement and get stuck. She floored it to get free and charged across the parking lot like a bull through the streets of Pamplona.
“It’s a little terrifying,” said Jennifer Clausen as she looked at the collapsed remnants of her next door neighbor’s apartment. “The car could have come through my dining room!”
The impact shook the whole building, knocking pictures and other hangings off of Bridget Davis’s walls.
“It sounded like an earthquake,” Davis said as she held a shattered frame containing a picture of her grandson. “I was just sitting here watching television when I heard it.”
Nobody was in the apartment where the car came through the wall. The residents of that unit have been moved into another apartment in the same complex.
As a precaution, the woman living upstairs has been moved to a nearby motel. That bill is being handled by the American Red Cross.
Maintenance crews expect to have an apartment ready for her by the end of the week.
