George Can Get Law License Back
Mick Trevey
MADISON - Former State Senator Gary George could soon be able to practice law again.
He lost his license for taking kickbacks in office.
Gary George went to prison for four years for taking those kickbacks. You might remember he lost his law license in the scandal, but Wednesday the state Supreme Court said it will allow him to reapply for that license in June.
Former State Senator Gary George says he does want to practice law again.
He admitted he broke the public trust by taking kickbacks.
He pleaded guilty in 2004 to indirectly taking payments from OIC, an agency that had contracts to administer Wisconsin’s welfare reform program. Court records show the money was used to buy the senator's good will.
It was a breach of public trust, and now George wants to again be in a position of trust as a lawyer.
There is still a list of things he will have to do before he can actually get his law license back, including going back to the Supreme Court.
TODAY’S TMJ4’s Mick Trevey talked to former Supreme Court Justice Janine Geske about it.
Mick Trevey: “Is there a lot of scrutiny on someone who has lost their license trying to get it back?”
“There is. It's not an automatic thing. He has to prove he ought to get it back,” Geske said.
Geske says that means the convicted former state senator will have to prove that he's now worthy of trust.
“It’s probably six months to a year before he would get his license back,” Geske said.
Gary George still owes the feds more than $400,000.
At least one person Mick Trevey talked to Wednesday says George should be able to get his law license and get to work so he can pay off that money.
