Checks Worth Thousands Found

MILWAUKEE - Imagine finding a bag containing hundreds of thousands of dollars in checks on the side of the road.

Dave and Cindy Kaminski were driving along College Avenue when they saw a bag at the intersection with things blowing out of it.

“We thought it was newspaper but then all of a sudden I look down and there were papers all over the road and we started picking them up and I said ‘Cindy these are all checks. We’ve got to collect them,’” Dave Kaminski said.

According to police reports, they were personal checks were written out to different Pick ‘n Save stores. There were a lot of checks...worth more than $500,000.

Dave and Cindy knew they had to work fast to get all the bags of personal checks.

“It was their information individually flying all over the place. In the wrong hands, that would be really bad,” Cindy Kaminski said.

Dave and Cindy say the bag indicated the checks were on their way to be deposited at Chase Bank. Police are still investigating, but believe the bag of checks somehow fell out of an armored truck.

There's no indication of a crime.

Dave and Cindy are proud they did the right thing and hope others would do the same.

“Stop, pick them up, call the authorities and put them in the right hands and like she said if they get in the wrong hands you never know what they can do with a personal check,” Dave Kaminski said.

Police say the store picked up the checks and they are now in the right hands, but you really have to give the Kaminski’s a hand because they spent half an hour running around the busy street getting those checks.
