Cell Phone Road Rage
Michael George
GREENFIELD - A road rage arrest after a man chases down a woman at an intersection.
The suspect admits what he did was wrong, but he says there's much more to the story than that.
Gerald Oesterreich says he felt like he was justified when he slammed on the brakes in front of a woman and tried to take away her cell phone.
Oesterreich says he was fed up with what he calls a reckless driver.
"She was taking up two lanes and she was talking on her phone,” Oesterreich said.
TODAY’S TMJ4’s Michael George tried contacting the woman driving that car, but he wasn’t able to reach her, but Oesterreich admits he took matters into his own hands.
Michael George: “The police report says that you pulled in front of her and slammed on the brakes, is that true?"
"That's true, right over here in front. She had no business being in this lane,” Oesterreich said.
Oesterreich stepped out of the car furious, screaming at her to get off the phone, and when she didn't, that's when he decided to make a grab for it.
"I tried. I was going to take her cell phone from her. I don't even know if I touched it or not,” Oesterreich said.
The woman claims he shouted a racial slur, but Oesterreich says that isn't true. He said he gets why the police arrested him, but he thinks the other driver should be punished too.
“Why should somebody else pay, because you gotta be talking on your phone all the time. Keep your mouth shut and drive,” Oesterreich said.
Oesterreich was taken to the station and cited for disorderly conduct.
