Family of Sikh priest thanking community for messages of support
OAK CREEK- The Sikh priest shot during the August 5 massacre at the Sikh temple in Oak Creek is making a slow and gradual recovery, according to a statement by Punjab Singh's family.
The priest's family said they are grateful for the many messages of support they have received.
"It is a comfort for us to know people are keeping our father in their thoughts and prayers," said the statement.
Froedtert Hospital officials said Singh's condition was upgraded to serious on Wednesday, and that he was transferred out of the intensive care unit.
Singh was in a coma following the temple shooting, according to family members. Singh is the only person still hospitalized from that shooting last month.
Meanwhile, organizers with Horizon Home Care & Hospice took time out of their annual Life Lights memorial event to remember those who died during the Sikh temple massacre.
At an event acknowedging and remembering lost loved ones, crowds lit candles and even held a moment of silence for the victims of the temple tragedy.
"You realize how this affects a family, and then think about your own possible loss and want to be their to support others," said Mike Hogan of the Horizon Home Care & Hospice.
Grief counselor Kayla Waldschmidt told TODAY'S TMJ4 her company has reached out to the Sikh community, offering members time to talk about what happened, and cope with the loss. Though the memories are still fresh, a community stands ready to help.
"Whether it comes from us or somebody else, we want to make sure we get them connected to the right resource so they can heal and move forwards in their lives," said Waldschmidt.
