Officer shoots, kills charging pit bull
MOUNT PLEASANT - Mount Pleasant police say an officer has shot and killed a pit bull that charged at him.
Police received a report Sunday morning that a man was trapped on top of a vehicle. The man told police he couldn't get down because a pit bull was trying to attack him.
The responding officer saw the dog in the yard about 15 feet from the man.
The officer drove between the dog and the vehicle, allowing the man to escape.
A Racine Journal Times report says the officer contacted the residence where the dog apparently lived but no one answered the phone or front door.
When the officer exited his squad, the dog allegedly chased him across the street.
Police say the officer was forced to shoot in self-defense.
