Fundraiser for fallen deputy
MILWAUKEE - It was an accident that stunned Milwaukee.
Milwaukee County Sheriff's Deputy Sergio Aleman was killed in a car crash while on duty back in July.
Sunday, a community pulled together to help his grieving family.
Cars started pulling in front of Clifford's Family Restaurant on Forest Home Avenue Sunday afternoon as people flocked there for the event benefitting the family of Deputy Aleman.
"It's an event to support and to love and encourage the family to express love to the family just because of Sergio's loss," cousin Marvin Aleman says.
Deputy Aleman died after crashing his department vehicle into the back of a flatbed truck on I-43 near Fond du Lac Avenue. He left behind a wife and five kids, ranging in age from six to 22. Friends say Sergio was a wonderful family man.
"He always messed around joked around," family member Rob Block says. "The guy was always happy. I don't think I've ever seen him mad, angry. He was just a positive influence on all of us."
The Sunday benefit was a 12-hour event with a moving tribute to Deputy Aleman at 12:17, the time of his death.
There were raffles and a silent auction.
"He was a great person, a great guy and I'm going to miss him. Everybody is."
Two memorial funds have been set-up in Deputy Aleman's name to help his family.
Donations can be made at any M&I Bank or Tri-City Bank.
