YMCA counselor charged with felonies for allegedly abusing campers
FOND DU LAC- Fond du Lac County Sheriff's deputies arrested an 18-year-old counselor earlier this month.
He now faces four felony charges for abusing campers.
Investigators told TODAY'S TMJ4 a 12-year-old boy stepped forward, telling deputies 18-year-old Troy Orthmann touched him repeatedly, weeks before he allegedly assaulted another kid at camp.
What started as a warning is now a full-blown investigation.
Orthmann already faced a misdemeanor charge for allegedly touching a camper inappropriately at Camp Matawa.
This week, prosecutors slapped him with four felony sexual assault charges -- accusing the teen of molesting two young boys.
The latest charges suggest Orthmann assaulted a 12-year-old three times in July -- twice on a school bus packed with other children.
The boy told deputies when he fought the advances, "Orthmann would push his body back into the seat and continue [molesting] him."
"We're not supposed to say anything, they told us," Orthmann's mother told TODAY'S TMJ4 earlier this month. Her son will fight the charges against him.
"Troy is an Eagle Scout. He's been really active in the community, and I really feel that everything will come out, and everything will work really wonderful."
YMCA's top brass wouldn't speak to TODAY'S TMJ4, but said safety was paramount, writing in part: "....we continue to fully cooperate with the authorities on this matter."
Parents, already unsettled by one allegation of abuse, told TODAY'S TMJ4 they're concerned.
"It's kind of unthinkable, really, that there's allegations of sexual abuse between a counselor and a kid," said Ken Reibel, whose child went to Camp Matawa.
Authorities would not tell TODAY'S TMJ4 if they believe Orthmann has assaulted other victims. The teen will be back in court to face the new charges in two weeks.
