Brewers unveil Bob Uecker statue at Miller Park
MILWAUKEE - Mr. Baseball, Bob Uecker, calls it a tremendous honor. He will get a special place in Milwaukee baseball history, in bronze in front of Miller Park.
The Brewers unveiled a statue of Uecker Friday afternoon.
"I was never one to worry about having a statue, I never thought about anything like that. I always wanted to have a good time and enjoy people and entertain people and do baseball," Uecker told Wisconsin's Morning News.
He talked a little today about his craft. "The games where you're getting your brains beat out, you've gotta do something else to keep people listening. People expect you to be humorous and that's what I always tried to do."
Bob Costas is in town to host the unveiling and several other of Uecker's celebrity friends attended.
Uecker is the fourth person to have a statue outside the main gates at the ballpark. Aaron, Selig and Hall of Famer Robin Yount also have them.
Uecker was a light hitter in the majors, batting .200 for the Milwaukee Braves and other teams as a catcher over six seasons.
He has been in the Brewers' radio booth since 1971.
