UW-Madison is curtailing students' moped use
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- University of Wisconsin transportation officials are putting new restrictions on students' moped use.
The Wisconsin State Journal reports (http://bit.ly/Npq84x ) they are ending the practice of students riding between classes by requiring owners to apply for parking in one of 52 campus lots starting Sept. 1. They could face a $40 ticket.
Previously, a moped parking permit earned an owner access to any moped parking space on campus.
UW Transportation Services Director Patrick Kass says the new rule is to get moped owners to park in one place and walk or ride buses between buildings.
University officials say the policy will make UW safer and less congested, but riders say it makes their mopeds "obsolete."
Sophomore Anthony Winchell says he uses his moped to get to places on time.
