Tommy Thompson reverses position, calls on Akin to step aside
MADISON- The calls from Wisconsin Republicans on Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin to step aside are growing.
Gov. Scott Walker and Republican Senate candidate Tommy Thompson on Tuesday urged Akin to get out of the race after Akin said over the weekend that women's bodies are able to prevent pregnancies in cases of what he called "a legitimate rape."
Thompson initially said it was up to Akin on whether to stay in the race, but Tuesday he called on him to step down. Walker on Tuesday said Akin should step down and that his comments were "ignorant at best and outrageous."
Wisconsin Republican Sen. Ron Johnson was one of the first elected officials on Monday to call on Akin to get out of the race against incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill.
