Man arrested for allegedly lying to police about missing boater near Wind Point
RACINE COUNTY- A 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of lying to police about a boating trip near Wind Point that prompted several authorities to search for a reported missing man for hours.
Apparently the 44-year-old boater told authorities he was knocked out of the boat by a large wave in Lake Michigan, and that a 49-year-old man went missing, according to the Racine County Sheriff's Office.
The Journal Sentinel reports the two actually had engine trouble around 3 a.m. Monday, but were able to get safely to shore. The 49-year-old man then went to get help, and when he came back to the boat, the 44-year-old man wasn't there.
The 44-year-old boater then told Wind Point Police that he swam at least an hour to reach the shore.
That started an all out search by Racine County Sheriff's deputies, the Racine Fire Department and the Coast Guard, in the air and on Lake Michigan for the 49-year-old man.
They found the 49-year-old around 7:45 a.m. Monday, sleeping behind a garage.
Authorities say alcohol may have played a contributing factor in the incident.
