Mentally ill man in critical condition after incident in squad car
MILWAUKEE - A mentally ill man was in critical condition Sunday after repeatedly banging his head against a metal post in the back of a Milwaukee Police Department squad car.
Officers were called to a group home in the 5700 block of N. 94th St. late Saturday night because the suspect had become violent and began destroy property.
"When officers encountered the subject, he struck one officer in the face," Milwaukee Police Department Anne E. Schwartz said. "He was taken into custody, handcuffed and placed in the back of a Milwaukee Police squad."
While he was in the back seat, the man began to repeatedly bang his head on a metal post.
"Concerned the subject would seriously injure himself, officers removed him from the back of the squad car," Schwartz added. "When the subject was removed, he resisted the officers and then began to vomit. Officers immediately summoned medical attention and an ambulance."
"CPR was administered at the scene and the suspect was taken to a local hospital where he was in critical condition this morning."
The Department said officers did not use any force used to take the man into custody.
The man's family took him to the home earlier Saturday night because he was being violent at a family member's home. Police said he is being treated for mental illness.
