HARTFORD - Authorities say a single-engine plane caught fire shortly after refueling in Washington County at the Hartford Municipal Airport around 9:45 a.m. Thursday.

"The individual fueled up his airplane...he got in his plane, started it and once he tried moving, he noticed smoke," said Airport Manager Darryl Kranz.

The Hartford Fire Department said fire trucks responded to the scene and covered the plane with foam, but the plane is considered a total loss.

Thick smoke and flames soared into the sky and TODAY'S TMJ4 reports that two men were on board the plane and got out safely.

According to Kranz, "The insurance company is going to come out and check out why that plane started on fire."

The pilot was coming from the EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, on his way home to Michigan.

The plane was valued at $70,000.
