Downed trees, power lines after storm in Waukesha County
DELAFIELD- People in Waukesha County woke up Thursday morning to lots of storm damage caused by high winds in the area.
The Waukesha County Sheriff's Department told Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Jay Sorgi that no one was exempt from the damage caused by heavy winds.
Dan Joustra and his sons used a ladder to free branches from his driveway. The storm yanked power lines right off his house.
"I'm going to be out of power for a while. We also had a fire up the block with a line down, and there was another line down at the neighbor's house," said Joustra.
About 20,000 people lost power at the peak of the storm.
Chloe Wandschneider was surprised by the piercing winds and rain. "It was like milk being poured from a pitcher. You couldn't see (right) in front of you," said Wandschneider.
Neighbors said they believe the storms were a bit selective.
Many of the trees around Delafield are undamaged. But just 20 feet away from them, you get century old trunks like this one, pulled from their roots in a violent storm.
While homeowners dealt with the damage, grounds crews at Saint John's Northwestern Military Academy had their hands full, dismantling trees that had stood on campus for generations.
"Our crews are pretty quick about these things, but this is the largest one we've had, so we'll see," said John Thornburg, chief of staff at Saint John's Northwestern Military Academy.
Crews also went to the scene of numerous intersections that were blocked off due to downed trees and power lines in the areas of Pewaukee and Wales.
As of Thursday evening, around 200 We Energies customers in Waukesha County were still without power.
Nobody was hurt in any of these incidents.
