Walker directive aimed at getting hay to farmers
MADISON- Gov. Scott Walker is easing certain transportation limits in a bid to help drought-stricken farmers who are scrambling to get enough livestock feed.
Walker on Tuesday directed the state Department of Transportation to life certain weight restrictions. The order will allow the transport of heavier loads of hay bales along most state and local roadways.
The order begins Tuesday and runs through June 30 of next year. As part of the order, the transportation department will issue free permits authorizing the transport of heavier hay loads under certain conditions.
The most cases, the maximum gross weight can't exceed 90,000 pounds and the maximum overall height will be 14 feet, 6 inches.
The permits won't be in effect during the upcoming Labor Day weekend or next year's Memorial Day weekend.
